50 Cent

"Before I Self Destruct" (Aftermath)

Even though it's been years since 50 Cent supported himself through, er, pharmaceuticals distribution, the grit and violence of his former lifestyle still figure prominently in his music.

Write what you know? Yes. Also: Write what you know will make money.

That's exactly what 50 Cent, born Curtis James Jackson III, has done on three hit albums since 2003. His fourth, "Before I Self Destruct," adheres to the formula. It's a collection of menacing songs about rewarding friends, dealing harshly with enemies and chatting up the ladies. Sure, the story's grim, but worldwide sales of more than 27 million records suggest plenty of people are eager to hear it.
