Preventing doggie breath

•Make sure the dog has regular checkups to ensure there are no medical issues that could cause bad breath, and so your veterinarian can monitor his teeth and breath.

•Brush the dog's teeth regularly with canine toothpaste since human toothpaste can upset a dog's stomach.

•Feed the dog a high-quality, easily digestible food.

•Provide hard, safe chew toys. Its teeth get cleaned by the natural process of chewing.

Dog boots

Sled-dog trainers go out of their way to protect their dogs' pads with boots and by pulling out clumps of snow and ice that have formed between the toes.

Pets also have to deal with chemical ice melters that can burn the pads. Just be sure the boots fit properly and put them on the dog in the house at first to allow the dog to get used to them in a comfortable setting. There is no point taking a dog for a walk outside in boots if it has yet to walk around comfortably indoors while wearing them.

Cat flu

Humans don't get viruses from cats or usually give viruses to cats, but there have been some individual cases of people with the H1N1 influenza virus passing it on to their cats.

While it's unusual, some viruses will jump species.

If a cat goes off its food and water for more than a day, it's time to contact the veterinarian.
