Set that blue box down. There's a new boxed mac 'n' cheese in town.
In April Cracker Barrel Cheese introduced four of its own mac 'n' cheese flavors, using its award-winning cheeses: sharp cheddar, sharp white cheddar, cheddar havarti and sharp cheddar & bacon.
Unlike typical boxed varieties, these 11.9- to 14-ounce boxed products use a pouch of cheese sauce instead of powder plus milk.
We tried three varieties, and while nothing is as good as homemade, these all came a step closer. The macaroni is plumper, the sauce is cheesier - and more flavorful, if not exactly that true intense "sharp" cheese flavor. The bacon adds an interesting smoky note in the sharp cheddar & bacon variety.
The company - interestingly, owned by Kraft, and of no relation to the Cracker Barrel stores/restaurants - also says its mac 'n' cheese contains no artificial flavors or dyes.
They're available in grocery stores; suggested retail price is $3.49 a box.
