Art film in Millville among events At The Shore Today

Art film in Millville

What Is It: "Civilisation: A Personal View by Kenneth Clark" is a U.K. television documentary that aired in 1970 in the U.S. The film outlines the history of Western philosophy, art and architecture since the Dark Ages. The 13th and final program of the 13-part series will be shown tonight in Millville. The screening is part of the film series Tuesdays with Tricia Dufford, above.

What To Expect: Clark concludes with "Heroic Materialism," his discussion of materialism and humanitarianism of the past century. This takes us from the industrial landscape of 19th century England to the skyscrapers of 20th century New York. The achievements of the engineers and scientists - such as Ernest Rutherford and Isambard Kingdom Brunel - having been matched by reformers such as Anthony Ashley-Cooper, Earl of Shaftesbury and William Wilberforce.
