'Zumba Marathon' at Shore Mall
What Is It: You can shake your booty and do good deeds at the same time today. The Offshore Cultural Center at the Shore Mall hosts a Zumba marathon that starts at 11 a.m. - and lasts as long as the Zumba leaders keep showing up. The free event will raise money for the Wounded Warrior Project, which helps Americans hurt while serving their country.
What To Expect: Zumba fans know it's a workout based on dance - and the music makes the exercise fun and fast. The Offshore Cultural Center is looking for Zumba instructors to donate their time by leading a 20- to 30-minute routine. The marathon will go on "until we're out of Zumba Fitness instructors." Levar "Big Sarge" Curry, above, will be the emcee.
Event Info: The marathon is set to start at 11 a.m. in the parking lot outside the Offshore Cultural Center, at 6725 Black Horse Pike, in Egg Harbor Township's Shore Mall. For more details, visit shoremall.com or call 609-602-0906.
Miss New Jersey in Ocean City
What Is It: Twenty-five young women with New Jersey connections and Miss America dreams compete tonight in the finals of the Miss New Jersey Pageant at the Ocean City Music Pier. The winner will represent the state in Miss America in January.
What To Expect: The state Misses do everything the competitors always did in Miss America, which was held a few miles to the north in Atlantic City for more than 75 years. The Miss New Jersey contestants show their talents, pitch their platforms and hold their breath in the dramatic moments before the winner is revealed. Dena Blizzard, a former Miss New Jersey turned standup comic, is the returning host.
Event Info: The show starts at 7:30 p.m. in the Ocean City Music Pier, Boardwalk at Moorlyn Terrace. Tickets are $50, available at the box office or by calling 609-315-1423.
Jazz pianist Marc Cary at Dante Hall
Who Is He: Downbeat magazine, the bible of jazz, calls Marc Cary one of the leading "multi-dimensional keyboard players on the scene today." This four-time Grammy nominee brings his Focus trio to Atlantic City's Dante Hall for a concert tonight sponsored by the Chicken Bone Beach Historical Foundation, the group that puts on the free, weekly jazz concerts each summer on the Boardwalk at Kennedy Plaza.
What To Expect: Cary has worked with jazz stars ranging from Abbey Lincoln to Ani DiFranco to Winton Marsalis. The trio he leads into historic Dante Hall tonight focuses on cross-pollination - drummer/percussionist Sameer Gupta has roots in India and its music, and critcis say David Elwell's bass playing shows influences of Chinese tones and scales. This show is a fundraiser for the Chicken Bone Beach concert series.
Event Info: Tickets are $20. Dante Hall is at 10 N. Mississippi Ave., Atlantic City. Showtime is 7:30 p.m. For more details, call 609-841-6897.
Wanda Sykes at Borgata
Who Is She: Wanda Sykes has been saying a lot over her 25-year comedy career - so much, she wrote a book called "Yeah, I Said It." And she says it very colorfully in her stand-up act, which comes to Borgata Hotel Casino & Spa for two shows this weekend, starting tonight.
What To Expect: Sykes has written for "The Chris Rock Show," starred in her own Comedy Central specials, and worked in movies too. But doing stand-up is still her meat, and she chews through a lot of subjects in her fast-paced, foul-mouthed shows.
Event Info: Showtime is 9 p.m. today and Saturday in the Music Box at Borgata, 1 Borgata Way, Atlantic City. For tickets or more details, see theborgata.com.
