Kenny Randall watched a Mainland Regional High School football team commit to Temple University last fall.

This week Randall did the same thing.

The 6-foot-3, 300-pound offensive and defensive lineman who will be a senior in the fall said Friday that he verbally committed to Temple earlier this week. Randall is one of the top linemen in the Cape-Atlantic League was effective at stopping the run last season.

“I dreamed of this my whole life,” the Linwood resident said in a telephone interview Friday afternoon. “I’ve played football my whole life. Step-by-step I wanted to make it somewhere. I didn’t know that it would be at a Division I college. It has a big impact on me.”

Randall said he likes how Temple has mentors to help players keep up with academic work.

“The football team is like a family,” the Linwood resident said. “I liked that.”

Randall follows recent Mainland graduate Jim Cooper, who signed a national letter of intent in February to play for the Owls. Cooper was one of the state’s best kickers last season. Randall said he became interested in Temple after speaking with Cooper.

Randall said he attended Temple’s spring game in April and went to a camp earlier this month at Temple.

Temple cannot comment on Randall until he signs a national letter of intent on the first Wednesday of February 2014. Temple finished 4-7 last season. The Owls hired Matt Rhule as their new coach in December.

Randall is the second local junior to verbally commit to Temple this month. Absegami running back David Hood has also committed to the Owls.

Randall said now that he has committed to Temple he’s not considering any other colleges.

“Temple is my No. 1 school,” he said. “I wanted to go there for awhile.”
