While the early Miss America pageants were a success, some Atlantic City community leaders felt the bathing beauty contest gave the city a bad image. So they cut their support, and the event was cancelled from 1928 through 1932. There was a 1933 pageant, but the event petered out again and there was no 1934 pageant.
Miss America returned in 1935 and she was back to stay. The pageant has been held continuously since that year.
