Boys soccer: Wildwood Catholic's John Gery has Goal of the Week

Each week, Corner Kicks takes a closer look at a key goal.

John Gery

Wildwood Catholic senior forward

Wildwood Catholic High School's John Gery knew what his team needed.

The Crusaders trailed Atlantic County Institute of Technology 1-0 at halftime Wednesday.

The team needed a goal.

Gery delivered.

Sophomore Patrick McGann carried down the left side of the field before playing a cross into the center of the field.

Gery met the ball in the air and headed it past the keeper to tie the game.

"It was a perfect ball," Gery said. "He placed it right on my head.

"It was a really good feeling because we were down 1-0. It gave us a big boost in confidence to get that second."

Gery would score that one too.

McGann found Gery again on a late goal that clinched the 2-1 win.

"He's having a very nice season," Wildwood Catholic coach Mike Saioni said.

Saioni started Gery on defense to start the season but pushed him to forward after some key injuries. Saioni said Gery may be the team's top defender but is just as strong offensively.

After a draw and two losses to start the season, the Crusaders have gone 7-1-1 since. Gery has scored in five straight games.
