Absegami High School senior Katie Juniewicz won the girls Division 3A race at the Disney World Cross County Classic on Saturday in Orlando, Fla.
The event had four divisions, and the 3A and 4A (largest schools) ran together. Juniewicz was fifth overall in the 3.1-mile race, but first in her division in 19 minutes, 59 seconds.
The course was slow and muddy, since there had been a big rainstorm Friday.
“I took it out pretty fast and was near the front,” said Juniewicz, 17, of Galloway Township. “I promised (coach Janet Hutchings) I would come in first. I was fifth in the race and didn’t realize I had won for my division. But when they announced it, I fell to my knees. I was overwhelmed.”
