Hammonton High School’s Lou Corgliano won the boys junior race at the 17th annual Cherokee Challenge in Eve-sham Township on Saturday.

Corgliano finished the 3,200-meter race in 9 minutes, 40 seconds to finish first in a pack of 346 runners. He finished eight seconds ahead of Tatnall (Del.) student Jack Hagood.

“The win was really big for me, with about 350 runners there,” said Corgliano, a 17-year-old Hammonton resident.

“I won the CAL two-mile in the spring, but I count this as my first big win. It was me and like three other guys in the front pack, and when we got to the hill at about the first mile, they fell back and I turned it up and took the race.”

Mark Kundrotas, also of Hammonton, was 11th in the junior race in 10:13, the fifth-best local performance.

Lacey Township’s Danielle Leavitt was the top local girls finisher.

She placed second in the junior race in 11:24, behind Courtney Smith of Unionville, Pa., who won in 11:11.

In the boys senior race, Pleasantville twins Isaac and Jacob Clark finished sixth and seventh, respectively. Both finished in 9:51. Greyhounds teammate Dagoberto Arias was 26th in the same race in 10:23.

Absegami senior Salman Khalid had the fourth best local time, finishing 14th in 10:04.
