No lack of athleticism for Barnegat girls basketball team

Coach Alyson Wrisley has lots of seasoned athletes on her Barnegat High School girls basketball team.

Many of the Bengals players - including its three returning starters - are multisport athletes. Senior Bethany Cunningham plays soccer and lacrosse.

Senior Samantha DeCapua plays soccer and participates in track and field. Junior Sara Ridgway is a standout volleyball player and golfer.

Key reserve Marlena Brazill plays tennis in the fall - and that's just the beginning.

"The girls have a good maturity about them as athletes," Wrisley said. "They understand what it takes to win."

With Barnegat's experience and athleticism, Wrisley expects her team to be in the top three of the Shore Conference B South Division.

Barnegat should see a definite improvement on last year's five-win campaign.

In addition to their athleticism, the Bengals will rely on some basic principles - defense and effort.

"I have a strong defending team, and they're just really hard-working kids," Wrisley said.
