Jake Heminway has averaged double-digit points and rebounds in each of the past two seasons for the Cape May Tech High School boys basketball team.

This year, though, the 6-foot-6 center wants to do even more. He wants to lead the Hawks into postseason contention.

"It's hard to lead a team when you're a sophomore, a junior. You can't," Heminway said. "No one's going to give you the respect. As a senior, you have that respect from the coaches and teammates."

Heminway led the Cape-Atlantic League with 10.4 rebounds per game last season. He was ninth in scoring with 13.6 points per game and ninth in blocks with 1.2 per game.

With senior guards Conor Mulville and Robert Broughton, plus a strong sophomore class led by returning starter A.J. Pastor, Heminway should have plenty of help.

"All possibilities are out there," Heminway said. "We have all the (potential) to win our league. We can beat and compete with any team out there."

Coach Bob Ridgway said even though the Hawks went 6-22 last season, he expects them to contend for the state playoffs.

"We definitely have the ability to compete with everyone in (the CAL United Conference)," Ridgway said. "I'm excited. Kids are just buying into our system and working extremely hard.

"We're young. We have a great sophomore class that we're really excited about."
