The Middle Township High School football team will make its third playoff appearance in school history and its first since 2004 when it meets Willingboro in a state Group II quarterfinal at 7 p.m. today..
The Panthers are still seeking their first postseason win. Middle lost to Hammonton 32-12 in a 1993 South Jersey Group II semifinal (only four teams qualified for the playoffs back then). Pinelands Regional beat Middle 20-19 in a South Jersey Group II quarterfinal in 2004.
Middle is talented enough to upset a Willingboro team, which has won four straight.
Frank Riggitano, who coached Middle in the 1993 playoff game, returned this season and revived the program. Middle’s three losses this season are to playoff teams with a combined record of 20-4. The Panthers rely on a strong running game that features Terrance Toney, Nigel Case and Zach Vogelei.
Key players for Middle Township: Nigel Case, RB/LB, 77 carries for 681 yards; Zach Vogelei, RB/LB, 82 carries for 566 yards; Terrance Toney, RB, 61 carries for 467 yards; Joe Durso, QB,
Key players for Willingboro: Robert Cleveland, RB/DB, 197 carries for 1,218 yards; Anthony Robbins, QB; Antonio Pernell, WR; Rahajan Sams, WR.
Keys to victory: Both teams favor the run. The winner will be whatever team is able to control the ball on the ground.
