Previews of Thursday's high school football openers

The 2013 high school football season begins today with three games in order to avoid a conflict with the Jewish holiday of Yom Kippur, which starts Friday.

Here is a look at today's games (Last season's records in parentheses).

Pleasantville (0-10) at Mainland Regional (4-6)

7 p.m.: Mainland will rely on a talented sophomore class. Junior running back Justin Walsh showed breakaway speed in the preseason. Mainland won this Cape-Atlantic League interconference matchup 28-0 last season.

Freehold Township (4-6) at Southern Regional (9-3)

6:30 p.m.: Southern reached the South Jersey Group V final, losing to Williamstown 43-20 last year. The Rams graduated several standouts. Logan Sheehan steps in at quarterback. The Rams beat Freehold Township 28-0 in last year's opener. Southern will dedicate its field to former coach Ron Emmert at halftime.

Holmdel (4-6) at Barnegat (5-5)

7 p.m.: Barnegat returns numerous starters from last year's team, which made the playoffs. The Bengals feature junior quarterback Cinjun Erskine and lineman Sam Madden - both college prospects.
