With three minutes left to play, the Southern Regional High School football team blocked a crucial extra-point attempt to hold on and beat third-seeded Washington Township 33-32 Friday in a South Jersey Group V quarterfinal game.

The sixth-seeded Rams, ranked No. 9 in The Press Elite 11, won their fourth straight contest while ending No. 10 Washingtown Township’s seven game winning streak.

Abe Gonzalez opened the third quarter with a 55-yard rushing touchdown to bring Southern within one at 20-19. The Rams defense held the Minutemen scoreless for the third quarter to stay close. Gonzalez scored again to spark the fourth quarter scoring and give Southern its first lead of the night after quarterback Dan Higgins ran it in for the two-point conversion.

Southern (7-2) moves on to play second-seeded Eastern (7-3) in a semfinal match up.
