St. Augustine Prep lacrosse players Nick DeCaprio and Jared Chiachetti have both committed early in their careers to play at Division I colleges.

DeCaprio, a rising junior long-stick midfielder, will play for the University of Michigan. Chiachetti, a rising sophomore midfielder, will play for the University of Maryland.

Both will receive athletic scholarships, but they declined to say if the scholarships were full or partial.

"Committing early is a new aspect of recruiting in lacrosse," St. Augustine coach J.C. Valore said. "It's great to have them in schools. There's a lot of pressure on guys at that age. They have a lot of work ahead of them at St. Augustine, and down the line as well.

"Both Nick and Jared are very strong academically, and that plays a huge role in lacrosse."

DeCaprio, an Egg Harbor Township resident, also visited Penn State, Georgetown and Loyola (Md.).

"The Michigan coaches, the campus and the facilities were great," DeCaprio, 16, said. "The school has a great mixture of high academic and athletic standards. Now I'll be able to work on my game in the offseason and not attend the showcases. I'll be able to concentrate on school at St. Augustine a lot more."

Michigan struggles last season with a 1-13 record, but the program is only in its second year.

Chiachetti, a Medford resident, also visited Penn State and Delaware.

"Maryland is a great school for academics and lacrosse, and they'll be moving into the Big Ten in another year," Chiachetti, 15, said. "When I visited, I really liked the staff and they made me feel very comfortable. They have a really strong academic program and a lot of majors to offer.

"With three more years at St. Augustine, my big focus is that I want to win a state championship."

Maryland was 10-4 last season and lost to Cornell in the first round of the NCAA tournament. Both Maryland and Michigan will compete in the new Big Ten men's lacrosse conference starting in 2015.

St. Augustine was 12-8 playing a difficult independent schedule this spring. Chiachetti, with an offensive and defensive role, had four goals and three assists.

"Jared is a strong athlete who's steady and well-refined," Valore said. "He has a good lacrosse IQ, and that's a big part of our game. This year, he had a supportive role out of the midfield and was a two-way player. He was a big asset on both sides of the ball."

DeCaprio, whose role is defensive, had five assists this spring.

"Nick has a role similar to a midfielder, but when we go on offense he comes off," Valore said. "He's quick with a lot of stamina, and he knows how to make plays. He gets the ball on the stick and gets it upfield. He fractured his hip as a freshman and missed a lot of the season. But he had a good year this (past) year."

The commits continue a steady pipeline of Division I players to the school. Four 2013 graduates will play at Division I schools, four 2014 graduates have committed and three from the class of 2015 have committed.
