HAMMONTON - The St. Augustine Prep wrestling team likes where it stands after two convincing wins Saturday.

The same couldn't have been said just two weeks prior.

The Hermits, No. 7 in The Press Elite 11, ran its winning streak to seven with a 68-6 win against Williamstown and a 54-19 win against the host Blue Devils in Cape-Atlantic League nonconference match.

Not bad for one of the CAL's youngest teams.

The Prep started five freshman and two sophomores Saturday and have just three seniors on its roster.

"The lineup is looking good," Prep coach Bill Ward said. "I'm happy with the lineup, especially the progress of the younger guys."

The Prep's five freshmen were a combined 9-1 in the two wins with five pins.

The two sophomores - Jarred Hodges and Tom Lynd - were 4-0 with a pin, a technical fall and two decisions.

Lynd had one of the team's biggest victories Saturday.

Lynd won a 6-2 decision against Hammonton's Robert Frederico. The loss was the first this season for Frederico (21-1).

"That was probably my biggest win," Lynd said without hesitation.

Frederico took Lynd down early for a 2-0 lead. It was all Lynd from there.

Lynd picked up an escape and a takedown to take a 3-2 lead after the first period and added another escape and takedown in the second on his way to the big win.

"I just did what I do," Lynd said. "It feels pretty good."

Lynd exemplifies the rapid maturation of the team's young wrestlers this season.

"I can't say enough about Tommy Lynd's work ethic," Ward said. "He runs his sprints and everything he does with 110 percent and it shows. He has an unbelievable work ethic for a big guy. He just keeps going."

Lynd was one of eight double-winners for the Prep along with Reid White (106 pounds), Collin Donahue (113), Tom Gattinella (120), Jarred Hodges (132), Nick Clark (138), Jose Tabora (152), Tyler Sentman (170) and Justin Welsh (220) also won both of their matches.

The premier match of the day was ended prematurely.

Hammonton's David Williams and the Prep's James Bennett are No. 1 and 2, respectively, in The Press rankings of area wrestlers.

Williams fought off an early takedown attempt from Bennett and then headlocked Bennett to the ground for a takedown. Bennett came down awkwardly on his shoulder and had to injury default the bout.

The Blue Devils have been on the other end of plenty of injuries this season and had five opening-day starters out of action on Saturday.

But Hammonton coach Dave Mauriello wasn't making excuses.

"Injuries had nothing to do with it," Mauriello said. "They are tough. They are very tough down low and in the middle, which is where we have a difficult time.

"They were physical and aggressive today and took it to us in some of those matches."

Kellen Whitney (160), David Williams (182) and Robert Frederico (285) all had pins in Hammonton's win against Williamstown.

Logan Fiorentino (145), Whitney, Williams and Beebe all won twice on Saturday.
