Atlantic City boys seeded 3rd, Ocean City girls 6th in TOC

The Atlantic City High School boys basketball team has won 50-of-53 games and back-to-back state championships.

But that impressive resume wasn’t enough to earn the Vikings a bye in the Tournament of Champions.

Atlantic City, the state Group IV champion, will be the No. 3 seed in the TOC and play sixth-seeded and state Group I winner Pt. Pleasant Beach on Wednesday at 8 p.m. at the Pine Belt Arena in Toms River.

The winner plays second-seed and state Non-Public A champion St. Joseph-Metuchen at Monmouth University in West Long Branch on Friday at 6 p.m.

The TOC is seeded by an NJSIAA committee that consists of athletic directors, former NJSIAA officials and media members. The Press is not on the committee.

Vikings coach Gene Allen said he thought the Vikings deserved the No. 2 seed. But he also said it didn’t matter.

“Our goal was to win the state championship and anything after that is gravy,” he said.

In the girls TOC, Ocean City, the state Group III champion, is the No. 6 seed and the Red Raiders will play 6 p.m. Tuesday against third-seeded Red Bank Catholic at Pine Belt Arena.
