Three local high school baseball teams – St. Augustine Prep, Buena Regional and Vineland – earned invites to the Joe Hartmann Diamond Classic.

The 16-team, single-elimination tournament starts Saturday and features many of South Jersey’s top teams. The event is named after Hartmann, the former coach of Eastern and a fixture on the South Jersey baseball scene.

St. Augustine (12-4) and Buena (15-3) earned automatic invites because they are the current leaders of the Cape-Atlantic League American and National conferences, respectively.

Vineland (13-3) received an at-large berth. The Fighting Clan split two games with Buena Regional and had impressive wins over Holy Spirit and Camden Catholic.

The tournament field and schedule were announced Sunday night. A panel of sportswriters who cover South Jersey baseball, including The Press, selected the at-large teams.

The Classic began in 1974. Only three CAL teams – Millville (1978); Sacred Heart (2008); and Buena Regional (2011) – have won the event.

Here is Saturday’s first round schedule: The quarterfinals will be played May 18th. The semifinals and final will be played May 19th.
