High school roundup: Sacred Heart loses one, but wins three at softball tournament

The Sacred Heart High School softball team lost its first game but won three more in the Triton Coaches vs. Cancer Softball Tournament on Saturday at Triton Regional. The Lions are ranked seventh in The Press Elite 11.

Sacred Heart lost 3-0 to Camden Catholic, No. 11 in the Elite 11, in the double-elimination tournament. But the Lions rebounded to beat Maple Shade 12-0 in five innings, topped Camden Catholic 12-4 in a rematch, and defeated Eastern 13-5 in a game shortened to six innings by a time limit. Eastern is ranked fourth in the Elite 11.

The rest of the 10-team tournament is today. Sacred Heart (16-2) will play Paul VI in a losers bracket game at 10 a.m. at Triton. GCIT and Clearview are in the winners bracket. A Sacred Heart win would put the Lions against the GCIT-Clearview loser in a tournament semifinal. The winner of that contest advances to the championship game.

Sacred Heart's Gabby Castellini had a double and a two-run homer in the win over Maple Shade, and Danielle Lugo hit two doubles. Alyssa Waddington pitched a two-hitter in five innings, with three strikeouts and no walks.

Castellini had a double and a triple in the win over Camden Catholic, and Kaila Smith tripled. Lions pitcher Rosie LaGrotta gave up nine hits, struck out one and walked none.

Samantha Caterina, Smith and Lauren Dwyer each doubled against Eastern. Waddington was the winning pitcher, with two strikeouts and one walk.

Camden Catholic scored three runs in the final two innings to beat the Lions in the first game. LaGrotta struck out seven and walked two.
