Local minor-leaguers: Matt Szczur gets game-winning hit in 12th inning for Cubs' double-A team
OF Matt Szczur (Lower Cape May Regional) was 0-for-5 before hitting a bases-loaded single to break a 1-1 tie in the top of the 12th inning, and the Tennessee Smokies (Cubs) went on to beat Pensacola 9-1 in the double-A Southern League on Saturday.
Szczur ended up with another RBI single later in the 12th to finish 2-for-7 with two RBIs.
He is hitting .400 (6-for-15) through the first three games of the season.
RHP A.J. Holland (Holy Spirit) made his first start of the season for the Lynchburg Hillcats (Braves) and gave up five runs, four earned, in 42/3 innings in a 10-6 win over Potomac in the Class-A Advanced Carolina League.
He gave up eight hits, struck out five and walked one.
OF Darren Ford (Vineland) made his debut for the Indianapolis Indians (Pirates) in the triple-A International League, and went 1-for-4 with an RBI and a stolen base in a 5-3 win over Columbus.
LHP Scott DeCecco (Middle Township) did not pitch for the Clinton LumberKings (Mariners) against Burlington in the Class-A Midwest League.
DeCecco (0-1) has a 1.80 ERA after allowing three runs, one earned, over five innings in his first start Friday. He struck out six and walked one.
