Pat D’Arcy, Holy Spirit

In the quarterfinals, D’Arcy was taken down in the first and lost a 3-0 decision to Bergen Catholic freshman Nick Suriano.

D’Arcy then avenged a loss from the Region 8 finals and clinched a spot on the podium with a 3-1 decision against Clearview Regional’s Zack Firestone.

D’Arcy had an escape and a takedown in the second period en route to a 5-2 decision against Delbarton’s Ty Agaisse in the fourth round of wrestlebacks.

Eric Pruszinski, Lower Cape May Reg.

St. Peter’s Prep’s Alec Kelly took down Pruszinski right away and then pinned him with four seconds left in the first period in first wrestlebacks.

Zach Hicks, Lower Cape May Reg.

Hicks was taken down by Timber Creek’s John Amato early and eventually trailed 4-1 after the first period in first wrestlebacks. He was taken down again before getting pinned with 1 minute, 19 seconds left in the second period.

Tom Gattinella, St. Augustine Prep

Jackson Liberty’s Matthew Russo had takedowns in each of the first two periods en route to a 7-2 lead in first wrestlebacks. Gattinella escaped to start the third period but couldn’t score again and lost 7-3.

Billy Ward, Buena Regional

In a quarterfinal match, Ward trailed North Bergen’s Anthony Giraldo 2-0 after the first period and was pinned 40 seconds into the second.

Ward, who took third in the state his sophomore season, came one match short of placing with a 6-2 loss to Jackson Memorial’s Alec Huxford in his wrestleback.

Jarred Hodges, St. Augustine Prep

East Brunswick’s Sean Glasgow pinned Hodges with one minute left in the first period of first wrestlebacks.

Shawn Bryant, Egg Harbor Township

Bryant faced Brick Township’s Kyle Wojtaszek in first wrestlebacks, scoring two in the first period, one in the second and two in the third to win 5-0.

In second wrestlebacks, Bryant faced Hunterdon Central’s Collin Boylan. The match was scoreless until Boylan earned an escape early in the third period to go up 1-0. Boylan then scored a takedown, and Bryant was able to escape, but he lost 3-1.

Chris Serpico, Southern Regional

Serpico faced Wall Township’s Brett Donner in first wrestlebacks. The only scoring through the first three periods was one escape for each wrestler. In overtime, Donner had a four-point takedown in the final seconds to win 5-1.

Cesar Balmaceda, Atlantic City

Balmaceda faced Paramus’ Brandon Lopresti in first wrestlebacks, earning an escape and a takedown in the second period and winning 3-1.

In second wrestlebacks, Balmaceda took Hunterdon Central’s Tyler Cote down with 24 seconds left in the match for a 6-4 decision.

Balmaceda came one match short of placing after an 11-6 decision loss to Nutley’s Brandon Keena. Balmaceda and Keena were tied 6-6 when Keena took Balmaceda down to his back with less than 10 seconds left.

Tyler Sentman, St. Augustine Prep

Sentman and St. Peter’s Prep’s James Kellner were scoreless through the first period in first wrestlebacks. Sentman nearly rode him out in the second, allowing an escape with 14 seconds left. Kellner then rode him out in the third to win 1-0.

Luke Fernandez, Lacey Township

Fernandez and Hunterdon Central’s David Fenton were scoreless through most of the first period in first wrestlebacks, but Fenton took him down near the end and scored a pin with one second remaining.

David Williams, Hammonton

Williams won a defensive battle in the quarterfinals, using a second-period escape to win a 1-0 decision against Jackson Liberty’s Nick Zak.

Williams had an easier time in the semifinals, pinning Newton’s Josh Sibblies in just 55 seconds.

Ed Shockley, Millville

Shockley was taken down once in each period and lost a 7-3 decision to defending state champ Razohnn of Don Bosco Prep in the quarterfinals.

Shockley went to overtime in wrestlebacks with Hawthorne’s Evan Ramos but lost a last second 3-2 decision in double overtime.

Cory Damiana, Lower Cape May Reg.

Damiana was taken down in the first period in first wrestlebacks by Nicholas D’Uva of Parsippany Hills. But Damiana escaped, earned a takedown of his own and then pinned D’Uva with 10 seconds left in the first.

Going for a desperation takedown in the next wrestleback with time winding down, Damiana was taken down and lost a 5-2 decision to Wayne Valley’s Anthony Landberg.

Nigel Toussaint, Egg Harbor Township

Toussaint was taken down to his back late in the first period and lost a 13-3 major decision to Franklin’s Ralph Normandia in the quarterfinals.

Toussaint used a takedown in overtime to win a 3-1 decision against Brick Memorial’s Tyler Poling in third wrestlebacks.

One escape point turned out to be the difference as Toussaint dropped a 1-0 decision to Summit’s A.J. Iarussi.

Obi Kali, Millville

Kali faced Cranford’s Jeff Weiss in first wrestlebacks. Weiss earned takedowns late in the first period and early in the second on his way to a 7-0 lead. Kali eventually cut it to 7-5 early in the third but ended up losing 9-7.

Pat Schinder, Lacey Township

Schinder earned takedowns in each of the first two periods against East Brunswick’s Michael Quintin in first wrestlebacks. Schinder then pinned him with 13 seconds left in the second.

Schinder was pinned by St. Peter’s Prep’s Armond Cox in 45 seconds in second wrestlebacks.

Roy Lucas, St. Joseph

The top-seeded Lucas forfeited for the second straight day due to illness, this time in first wrestlebacks against Pennsville’s Cody Dooley.

Ray Ellis, Holy Spirit

Ellis fell behind 5-2 to Pope John XXIII’s Noa Merritt in first wrestlebacks. Ellis cut it to 5-4 on a takedown with 11 seconds left in the third period, but Merritt escaped and held on for the 6-4 win.
