Prequarterfinal matches involving local wrestlers


Pat D'Arcy, Holy Spirit, So.

D’Arcy jumped out to 2-0 lead with a takedown in the first period in his quarterfinal matchup with Eastern’s Ferdinan Mase. He extended his lead 3-1 early in the third period, which ended in a decision victory to advance to the quarterfinals Saturday.


Billy Ward, Buena Regional, Sr.

Billy Ward started the prequarterfinal match against Point Pleasant Boro’s Ryan Budzek with a takedown in the first period, followed with a reversal late in the second for a 7-4 decision. Ward moved on to the quarterfinals for the fourth straight year. 


Chris Serpico, Southern Regional, Sr.

Down 5-0, Serpico was headlocked by opponent Wayne Stinson from Northern Burlington in the prequarterfinals and pinned in 3 minutes, 22 seconds. 


Cesar Balmaceda, Atlantic City, Sr.

Balmaceda’s strong efforts in the prequarterfinals weren't enough to  knock off top-seeded Jonathan Schleifer from East Brunswick. Schleifer won by major decision 21-7.


Luke Fernandez, Lacey Township, Sr.

Fernandez was no match for top-seeded Jadaen Bernstein of Voorhees in the prequarterfinal round. He was taken down twice in the first period and twice in the second suffering a 12-3 major decision to Bernstein.


David Williams, Hammonton, Sr.

Two takedowns and a near fall in the first period helped Williams cruise to a 11-4 decision over Isaiah Soto from Bound Brook in the prequarterfinals.


Cory Damiana, Lower Cape May, Jr.

In the prequarterfinals, Damiana wrestled a tight match with Moorestown’s Tyreek Smith before falling to a 6-5 decision. Damiana was taken down in the last five seconds. Damiana controlled the match and had two takedowns in the first to take an early lead.

Ed Shockley, Millville, Jr.

Shockley came up big in the quarterfinals, knocking off Region 6 champion Michael Oxley of Christian Brothers Academy by a 2-0 decision.


Nigel Toussaint, Egg Harbor Township, Sr.

Toussaint moved onto the quarterfinals with a 5-2 decision over Mt. Olive’s Pete Andrich.

Pat Schinder, Lacey Township, Sr.

Schinder nearly pulled off an upset over Don Bosco’s Zack Chakonis in the prequarterfinals before losing 3-2.


Roy Lucas, St. Joseph, Sr.

The top-seeded heavyweight withdrew from the tournament. He weighed in, but wasn’t able to wrestle. Coach Joe Henshaw said that Lucas has bronchitis and a high fever. Lucas is also an asthmatic.

Pat D'Arcy, Holy Spirit, So.

D'Arcy advanced with a 4-0 decision over Adam La Bracio of Hillsborough. D'Arcy recorded a takedown in the first period and capped the win with a reverse in the third.

Eric Pruszinski, Lower Cape May, So.

Pruszinski dropped a 7-1 decision to Caldwell's Dean Caravella. Caravella's best move came in the second period when he cradled Pruszinski.


Zach Hicks, Middle, Sr.

Hicks was taken down in the first period and tilted in the second in result of a 7-2 decision at the hands of South Plainfield's Daniel Hedden. 


Jarred Hodges, St. Augustine, So.

Hodges held Cliffside Park's Matthew Joskowitz to a 1-1 tie early into the third period. Hodges eventually got ridden out and lost a 3-2 decision in triple overtime.

Shawn Bryant, EHT, Sr.

Bryant lost a 5-3 decision to Jake Legotta of Roxbury. The senior was taken down with four seconds left in the third period.


Cesar Balmaceda, Atlantic City, Sr.

The first Atlantic City wrestler at Boardwalk Hall since the 1970's earned a second-period pin in 3 minutes, 22 seconds over Kenny Long from Holy Cross.


Tyler Sentman, St. Augustine, Sr.

Sentman was unable to stay on his feet, getting taken down once in the first period and three more times in the third. He dropped a 10-3 decision to Brandon Simon from JFK-Iselin.

Luke Fernandez, Lacey, Sr.

Fernandez dominated Northern Burlington's Rahmil Davis earning a 13-4 major decision.


Ed Shockley, Millville, Jr.

Shockley moved quickly in his preliminary bout with Mauro Altamura of Hasbrouck Heights pinning him in 57 seconds.

Cory Damiana, Lower Cape May, Jr.

Damiana traded escape points in the first and second periods with West Deptford’s Jake Regina. Damiana, who recorded a takedown in the third, was taken down at the buzzer but earned a 5-4 decision on a locked hands penalty to win the bout.


Nigel Toussaint, EHT, Sr.

Toussaint registered a come-from-behind victory by a 3-2 decision. Toussaint trailed Northern Burlington's Lloyd Terry 1-0 after two.

Pat Schinder, Lacey, Sr.

Schinder recorded a takedown over High Point's Robert McDonnell in the first period, but McDonnell responded with a reverse to tie the score at 2-2. Schinder performed a tilt on McDonnell in the second period and went on to win by a 4-3 decision.

Obi Kali, Millville, Jr.

Kali forced overtime with a last-second takedown in regulation but fell 7-6 in double overtime at the hands of Evan Wayns from Shawnee.


Ray Ellis, Holy Spirit, Jr.

Ellis was taken down in the first period and twice in the second dropping a 7-3 decision to Hanover Park's Nicholas LaShell.
