Baseball roundup: Holy Spirit hands No. 1 St. Augustine first loss

Joe DiBuonaventura hit a bases-clearing triple with two outs in the sixth as Holy Spirit High School upset St. Augustine Prep 11-9 in a Cape-Atlantic League baseball game on Thursday. The Prep is the No. 1 team in The Press Elite 11 and one of the top teams in the state.

"This was one of the biggest wins in the program," Spirit coach Bob Soifer said. "I'm really proud of the guys. We're learning how to be a good baseball team right now. It was a total team effort."

Spirit's Ricky Hopkins had two doubles and three RBIs and Brandon Ott had an RBI double.

"It was like they won the state championship beating the No. 1 team in the state," Soifer said. "We have a lot of respect for St. Augustine Prep. They're a great team, well coached. This was a great win."

Absegami's Drew Roesch drove in the winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning as he hit into a fielder's choice with the bases loaded. Matt Branco scored the run. Buck Amend had two hits for the Braves.

Braves pitcher Matt Ardente went the distance and allowed four hits, with four strikeouts and one walk. Vineland pitcher Mark Rowan gave up seven hits, struck out five and walked none in 61/3 innings of work. The Fighting Clan scored in the fifth when Cameron Lopez hit into a fielder's choice.

Lower Cape May Regional 11, Cape May Tech 1, 5 innings

Lower Cape May sophomore Eric Goss struck out five in a five-inning complete game for his first career win. Brad Fournier, Connor Magee and Josh Pennington each had two hits and two RBIs.

Atlantic City broke up a no-hitter in the top of the eighth and scored to beat host Egg Harbor Township. Jake McClaskey's infield single scored the winning run from third base with two outs.

Murray Kanter led off the A.C. eighth with a double to break up EHT pitcher Matt Allen's no-hitter. Chris Upperman's sacrifice bunt was followed by McClaskey's single.

Winning pitcher John Bruccoleri went seven innings, and Kanter worked the eighth inning to get the save. Allen went eight innings and gave up two hits, walked one and struck out eight. EHT's Mike Lahoud went 2-for-3 with a double.

Nick Sinopoli singled home the winning run through the left side of the infield in the bottom of the eighth inning.

With one out in the top of of the eighth, Southern right fielder Dan Steadman threw out a Lacey runner trying to tag up from third to keep the game tied.

Sinopoli went 2-for-3. Dan Higgins went 3-for-4 with two steals.

Austin Peck and Donovan Walker each doubled for Lacey.
