Baseball, softball roundup: Ocean City's Beau Hall shuts out Hammonton in South Jersey Group III quarterfinals
Ocean City High School's Beau Hall pitched a four-hitter and singled in the game's only run as the host Red Raiders' baseball team beat Hammonton 1-0 Saturday in a South Jersey Group III quarterfinal.
Ocean City (22-3), the Cape-Atlantic League National Conference champion and ranked eighth in The Press Elite 11, has won 19 games in row.
O.C. also set a school record for wins in a season with 22. The old mark was 21 by the 2010 team.
The third-seeded Red Raiders host No. 10 Central Regional at 4 p.m. Tuesday in a South Jersey semifinal. Central upset second-seeded Moorestown 3-1 in its quarterfinal.
Hall, who was 2-for-3, singled to center to drive in Kyle Andrews in the first inning. Andrews singled to start the inning, and went to second on Christian Candeloro's sacrifice bunt.
"It was Beau Hall's game," Ocean City coach Craig Mensinger said. "We also made some phenomenal plays in the field in tough situations. Hammonton made the plays too."
Justin Smith allowed five hits in six innings, with eight strikeouts and three walks for Hammonton, the sixth seed.

Teammate Barry Buchowski was 2-for-3 with three runs. Winning pitcher Zach Warren gave up one hit in five innings, and Mike Elfreth pitched an inning of relief.
Elfreth was also 1-for-2 with two runs and an RBI.
The second-seeded Hermits host No. 7 Holy Spirit at 4 p.m. Tuesday in a South Jersey Non-Public A quarterfinal.
