The Holy Spirit High School girls varsity-eight crew topped off a huge day for the Spartans at the Philadelphia City Rowing Championships by rowing to a convincing victory in its final on Sunday.

The Spartans' varsity eight won by more than four seconds in the 1,500-meter championship race in 5 minutes, 2.83 seconds.

The Holy Spirit girls team also got victories from its lightweight eight, second eight and junior eight.

"You don't have many days like this, so we'll enjoy it and then go back to the drawing board," said Joe Welsh, the Holy Spirit girls crew coach.

The Mainland Regional girls varsity four won its division, topping rival Harriton.

St. Joseph's Prep, from Philadelphia, won the boys varsity-eight final in 4:21.54, and St. Augustine Prep was second in 4:24.92. Absegami took fourth in 4:33.52.

Their performances Sunday helped St. Augustine Prep and the Holy Spirit girls team keep their No. 1 rankings in The Press Elite 11s this week.

The Spartans' girls varsity-eight crew consisted of bow Michelle Smith, Danielle Larotonda, Tara Puhalski, Lauren Turner, Amanda Reale, Samantha Stoll, Christine Wojciechowicz, stroke Lauren Slattery, and coxswain Claire McLenna. Merion Mercy (Pa.) finished second in the final in 5:07.52, and Bishop Eustace took third in 5:07.56.

According to Welsh, the Spirit boat led by a few seats and then pulled away to win by a half-length of open water.

"It's a nice, impressive win for them," Welsh said. "They were thrilled. We (the varsity eight) have had a bit of a drought at the (City Championships) the last few years. They're mostly new from last year, and Lauren Turner is the only senior. It's fun to see how they do."

The Holy Spirit girls lightweight eight won a five-boat final in 5:03.19, beating second-place Mount Saint Joseph by more than five seconds. The Spartans' second eight captured its final by more than a second over Mount St. Joseph in 5:14.81. Holy Spirit pulled a mild upset in the girls junior-eight final, beating Oakcrest by 0.56 seconds in 5:11.99.

The Holy Spirit girls-lightweight eight crew consisted of bow Danielle Peck, Sofia Iaconelli, Nicole Maslowas, Caroline Bradley, Victoria Light, Katie Bainbridge, Shannon LaSala, stroke Cailin McCully and coxswain Kiersten Stone. The Spartans' girls second eight-crew included bow Michaela Baldino, Rachael Klaiss, Megan Gleason, Erin Coffman, Lauren Thomas, Melissa Clark, Sally Widmann, stroke Karli Libbey and coxswain Nicole Kilar.

"Our lightweights are still dominating," Welsh said. "We're so proud of them. They have six seniors and they're trying to take it all the way through (to win all the championship races). The second eight won a close race. They led all the way down, and Mount Saint Joseph put on a nice sprint, but they pulled it out. They're mostly seniors, so it's a nice win for them. The junior eight win was super for them."

The Mainland girls varsity four, which featured stroke Kennedy Stafford, Morgan Rann, Amanda Ryan, bow Stacey Price and coxswain Morgan Gerety), won in 5:28.35. Harriton was second in 5:29.14. In previous races in Philadelphia this spring, Mainland beat Harriton three weeks ago, and Harriton was first on April 21.

"They had a great race," Mainland coach Jeff Garbutt said of his crew. "Harriton made a really big charge, but we held them off. I'm excited. With Stotesbury and Nationals coming up, we have to get faster."

The Ocean City boys novice eight won its final in 5:03.79, beating second-place Haverford School by 0.83 seconds.
