Softball roundup: Southern Regional edges Brick Township in opener

Tianna Santiago went 2-for-4 with a triple and scored the winning run in Southern Regional High School's home opener as it edged Brick Township 5-4 in a Shore Conference softball game Tuesday.

Kate Archer went 2-for-3 for the Rams.

Winning pitcher Jessica Hewitt struck out two and allowed four hits.

Danielle Lugo led Sacred Heart and went 3-for-4, including a grand slam, two runs scored and seven RBIs. Rosie LaGrotta and Alyssa Waddington each went 3-for-3. LaGrotta pitched a perfect game with nine strikeouts for the win.

Holy Spirit's Brianne Long hit a two-run homer in the top of the first, but Millville pitchers Cassidy Gorgo and Lex Calores shut down the Spartans for the remainder of the game.

Gorgo earned the win with six strikeouts and two walks, while Calores struck out three.

Rachel Rivera led the Thunderbolts' attack going 3-for-3, including a double and home run, while scoring three runs and knocking in one.

Casey Derella and Katie Volor also homered for Millville, while Corie Collins was 3-for-3 with three RBIs. Amanda Buckson had two steals and two hits.
