Route 72 bridge inspection Friday to lead to lane closures during daylight hours
The state Department of Transportation will conduct an inspection of the Route 72 Causeway on Friday and again on Nov. 16 that will close lanes during daylight hours, a DOT spokesman said.
Last week DOT and consultant engineers performed post-hurricane inspections of all shore area bridges to assess any storm-related damage, Greeley wrote in an email. The Route 72 causeway was determined to be safe to resume operation, Greeley stated.
The Route 72 causeway is required to be inspected annually because of its structurally-deficient rating, he said.
The outside travel lanes in each direction will be closed during daytime hours. The annual inspection was scheduled to be conducted in October before the the storm, but had to be rescheduled.
Eastbound lanes of the Route 72 Causeway remain closed to non-emergency personnel for security concerns and public safety issues on the Long Beach Island side of the bridge.
