Atlantic City’s nationally renowned White House Sub Shop will reopen on Arctic Avenue today after being closed due to damage from Hurricane Sandy.
The shop will open during normal business hours — 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. About the only major change patrons should expect is a switch to fountain soda rather than cans.
“The booths are the same. The stools are in the same place,” co-owner Brian Conley said. “You’re going to know it’s the White House.”
The landmark shop has called 2301 Arctic Ave. home for more than 65 years, though in recent years it opened a second shop inside the Trump Taj Mahal Casino Resort.
Even as the shop underwent extensive renovation, customers would still march in and expect their sandwich orders to be filled, not realizing the eatery was closed for business and there was a reason the space was occupied by construction workers and equipment, Conley said.
“I don’t know how many people I’ve had to apologize to,” he said.
The shop’s nostalgic draw also was the main reason owners said they decided not to tamper much with the interior look and feel, although due to the flooding, owners had to purchase new refrigeration units, a water heater and other equipment.
“We got wiped out, but so did a lot of people on the coast,” Conley said.
