BACKGROUND: Looking for a place to get away from the beach and experience some of nature's other beauties? Leaming's Run Gardens are 20 acres of expertly designed and lush landscape with something for everyone - bridges, ponds, nooks and plenty of benches to birdwatch or just sit and soak up the scenery. There are 25 themed gardens, a fernery and a shady bamboo grove.
The kids will enjoy touring the colonial farm, where tobacco and cotton grow alongside herbs and a one-room farm building is waiting to be explored. The gardens are also a haven for wildlife, so if you're quiet - and lucky - you might get to see some of the animals, birds or butterflies that make the gardens home during the summer.
INSIDER INFO: The average visit is about an hour to two hours long, depending on how fast your family walks. There are picnic benches, but no food is sold on site, so pack a basket. The trails are stroller friendly.
