Working moms aren't the only ones who want summer camps for their kids, but for them it's essential. Just ask Nancy Sbrolla, of Northfield, an accountant who is greeted after work by energetic kids, even during the school year after they've been busy all day.

Without a summer program to give them exercise, fun and access to their friends, she can't imagine what she'd do.

"They've been going to (Northfield Community School's) day camp since my oldest was in kindergarten," said Sbrolla, of her children Alberto, 10, and Nathan, 6. The camp, such as many run by school districts, combines academics, and indoor and outdoor play.

"They know mom and dad have to work. If you ask them, they'll tell you (summer camp) is not work, it's fun."

With extended care before and after, parents can get affordable day care, and a camp experience, for their children weekdays from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. In Northfield, the summer camp is open to kids from any community, but some districts restrict enrollment to residents only.

For Cathy Pagliuca, of Woodbridge, Middlesex County, summer programs at The Nature Center of Cape May are all about education. She and daughters Nicole, 14, and Allison, 10, spend all summer in Cape May. Her kids have been going to the Nature Center's summer camp since they were 2 1/2 years old. This will be Nicole's second year as a student intern, and Allison will learn about animals and environmental topics.

"It's really fun. We help the teachers," said Nicole. "I get to work with animals like turtles, squid, eels and horseshoe crabs. We caught a little dog shark once, put it in a tank and tagged it, and sent it back. We do stuff with butterflies and birds, too."

"It's our favorite place on Earth," Cathy said. "They'll come home and see something at the beach, and they know what it is. I always think, 'I wish I knew that.'"

Pagliuca is a writing teacher at Brookdale Community College in Monmouth County.

"I take summers off, but sometimes pick up an online course I can do from anywhere and anytime," she said. "So when I need to concentrate, the kids are at the Nature Center."
