"Super Plungers" hit the 40 degree waterin Brant Beach at the start of the third annual Super

Looking for something to do before the Super Bowl? Come brave the icy Atlantic Ocean for the seventh annual "super plunge" at 1 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 6.

Super Plunge VII, a fundraiser organized by St. Francis Community Center and the swim teams of Southern Regional High School, will take place at the 48th Street Beach in the Brant Beach section of Long Beach Island.

Registration is $35. The student registration fee is $15 before Sunday and $20 on the day of the event. Participants are encouraged to seek sponsor donations in addition to their registration fee.

Registration will take place in the senior lounge at the Community Center from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 5, and 10 a.m. to noon Sunday, Feb. 6. Registration forms can be picked-up in advance at the front desk of the Community Center, or printed from stfranciscenterlbi.org and mailed to St. Francis Community Center, Attn: Super Plunge VII, 4700 Long Beach Blvd., Long Beach Township, N.J. 08008. All registered participants will receive a long sleeve commemorative T-shirt.

There will be post-plunge festivities at the Community Center immediately following the plunge and prizes will be awarded. Proceeds benefit programs and services offered at St. Francis Community Center and the Southern Regional swim teams.

Black History events

The Atlantic City Free Public Library will continue its tradition of offering a variety of programs throughout February to celebrate Black History Month.

One of the highlights will be a monthlong exhibit, "The Black Northside Empire: A Photographic Look at Atlantic City's African-American Community." The exhibit will focus on the 1920s to '40s.

African American Heritage Museum of Southern New Jersey founder Ralph E. Hunter Sr. is putting together the exhibit, which will feature photographs of influential people such as Sarah Spencer Washington and Enoch "Nucky" Johnson, along with the residents, businesses, professionals and churches of the Northside.

Bluegrass festival

The 34th Ocean County Bluegrass Festival comes to Albert Hall Sunday, Feb. 6. The concert, which runs from noon to 5 p.m., features nine bands, including Jim Murphy and the Pine Barons and the South Jersey Bluegrass Band.
