BACKGROUND: Operational since December 2005, the 380-foot-tall windmills are a source of alternative energy for the Atlantic County Utilities Authority. Five towering turbines produce 1.5 megawatts of energy each and omit no pollution. It's estimated the wind farm saves a total of 23,613 barrels of crude oil each year and provide enough energy to power 2,500 homes.
INSIDER INFO: The windmills work best in winds between 12 and 45 miles per hour. The blades rotate between 10 and 20 times per minute.
WHERE: The windmills are located on the ACUA's wastewater-treatment plant. Drivers can glimpse the mills from Routes 30 and 40 in Atlantic City or schedule a tour. http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&q=ACUA,+ROUTE+30,+ATLANTIC+CITY+NJ&sll=39.414447,-74.484558&sspn=0.128908,0.186768&gl=us&ie=UTF8&hq=ACUA,+ROUTE+30,&hnear=Atlantic+City,+NJ&ll=39.379094,-74.447136&spn=0.016122,0.023346&z=15" target="_blank">CLICK HERE FOR DIRECTIONS.
