BACKGROUND: It's amazing what spending a day in an acre of quietly beautiful trees and wildlife can do to soothe a tense body and mind - and this park has 900 acres. Waretown's Wells Mills County Park, the largest park in the Ocean County parks system, offers miles of trails, canoe rentals for lovely Wells Mills Lake and environmental programs conducted by experienced naturalists. A library, display floor and observation deck compose the three-story nature center and offer plenty to do for the whole family. The park also features a playground, open playing fields and a bike trail. Perfect for a picnic, a stroll or just a day away from the bustle.
INSIDER INFO: The park's monthly Full Moon Hikes, held, naturally, on those nights the moon is full and shining, are among its more popular events. Wells Mills also hosts the annual Pine Barrens Jamboree each October, a day devoted to celebrating piney culture complete with food, crafts and music.
