TRENTON — About 1.2 million New Jersey residents are expected to travel at least 50 miles from home during the Independence Day holiday, a slight decrease from last year.
The travel estimate comes from a poll conducted for AAA.
Spokeswoman Tracy Noble says the travel will be down a bit because it's a five-day holiday period this year instead of a six-day one last year when July Fourth fell on a Wednesday.
Gas prices in New Jersey are averaging $3.38 a gallon, a dime higher than this time last year.
The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey is expecting 620,000 to travel through Newark Liberty International Airport during the week. The Port Authority is also running extra PATH trains for those heading to the New York City fireworks display Thursday.
