ATLANTIC CITY — A wanted city man was charged after officers found him sleeping on the sidewalk with a handgun and heroin, police said.

At 10:44 p.m. Tuesday, Officers Sean McGettigan, Domenick Montanaro and Michael Osorio of the Tourism District Unit found Darrell Legette, 24, asleep on the sidewalk at Florida and Pacific avenues, Sgt. Kevin Fair said.

Legette had an active warrant for his arrest. After waking him and taking him into custody, officers found a loaded handgun in his pants’ waistband and four bags of heroin in his pocket, police said.

He was charged with unlawful possession of a weapon, certain person not to possess a weapon, possession of a controlled dangerous substance and violation of a city ordinance that bans sleeping in public places.

He was taken to the Atlantic County jail.
