AAA expects gas prices to continue to dip towards the end of the year – which has been the most expensive for gas prices on record.

The organization says gas prices have dipped consistently since mid-September and the national average of $3.37 per gallon is three cents less than a week ago and nine cents less than a month ago.

“Although 2012 will be the most expensive year on record for gas prices, AAA believes gas prices will continue to decline and motorists could actually pay the lowest gas prices of the year by New Year’s Eve,” said Tracy Noble, spokesperson for AAA Mid-Atlantic in a release.

AAA does warn the prices could remain flat or rise slightly due to political events, but does expect the prices to continue to drop through the new year. Prices could average between $3.20 and $3.40 a gallon by New Year’s Day.
