Rules barring public access to certain government records, including state police policies, are illegally set by the Attorney General’s Office, the American Civil Liberties Union of New Jersey claims in a lawsuit.

The rules, the ACLU claims, violate the Open Public Records Act because they exempt “exceedingly broad categories of documents” the lawsuit states, according to The Star-Ledger, which reported the filing Thursday.

The suit was filed July 2.

Among the information exempted were State Police policies and overtime records.

The ACLU seeks to have the rules, which were implemented late last year, overturned.
