LITTLE EGG HARBOR TOWNSHIP — For the second time in a little more than a month, the Township Committee voted unanimously to return a laid-off police officer to work.

Committee members voted during the regular township meeting Thursday evening to reinstate Officer Joseph Falkiewicz, 27. Falkiewicz and 10 other officers were laid off in October 2010 to balance a budget shortfall.

After being laid off, Falkiewicz was hired by the State Park Police through the state Department of Environmental Protection.

“I’m very happy to be back in Little Egg and I want to thank the New Jersey State Parks Police for giving me the opportunity to work for them,” Falkiewicz said.

Police Chief Richard Buzby said it was his privilege and honor to recommend that Falkiewicz be rehired.

“Joe is a self-starter, and he’s not just popular amongst his colleagues but he’s also popular in the community,” Buzby said.

Seven officers have returned to work since the layoffs.
