GALLOWAY - A 10 year-old Egg Harbor Township boy died and his mother was critically injured Thanksgiving night in a single car accident on the Garden State Parkway in Galloway, according to state police.

The accident happened around 8:09 p.m. in the southbound lane near milepost 40.7, Sgt. Stephen Jones said on Friday. Salina Khan, 39, of Egg Harbor Township was driving in the right lane when she lost control of the car for unknown reasons, Jones said. The car spun off the left side of the road and crashed into two trees before stopping.

Khan, who suffered head, leg and neck injuries, and her children, Abedin, 10, and Deena, 5, were transported to AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center in Atlantic City, Jones said. Both children were wearing seat belts but Khan was not, according to police.

Abedin, who was sitting in the front passenger seat, died of his injuries. Deena, who sat in the back seat and had facial injuries, was released on Friday and Khan was still being treated at the hospital and she is listed in critical condition, according to Jennifer Tournetta, an AtlantiCare spokeswoman.

Police are investigating the crash but State Sgt. Brian Polite said there was no indication that alcohol was involved. The parkway was closed for a half-hour to clear the scene, Jones said. Galloway Township EMS and the Galloway Fire Department helped at the scene.

State police are asking anyone who witnessed the accident to call 609-296-0503.

This is very sad..loss of a child..I praying for comfort and peace for this family... One thing: child car safety..children should be seated in the back seats of any vehicle while driving them around. Advocating for child safety is part of what I do, when I read the part where the child was in the front seat, I got concerned about how safe it is for young children to be seating in the front of a car. Parents: rethink where your child should be seated in a vehicle.
