DOWNE TOWNSHIP - Three people were rescued Friday morning after their boat took on water and sank five miles southeast of Fortescue Inlet, the U.S. Coast Guard said.
A crew member of the 22-foot Big Trout called the Coast Guard at 10:04 a.m. Friday to report that the boat was taking on water, the Coast Guard said.
Crew members aboard the vessel Serenity reported rescuing two of the three occupants of the Big Trout from the water, the Coast Guard said. A rescue boat crew from Coast Guard Station Fortescue Inlet in Cumberland County arrived at about 11 a.m. and rescued the third person.
A helicopter crew from Air Station Atlantic City also responded, the Coast Guard said.
All three people were placed on a Coast Guard boat and taken to Anchor Marina in Maurice River Township, Cumberland County, the Coast Guard said. There were no reported injuries.
The Big Trout's global positioning system was not working properly, and as a result, it took the Coast Guard a little longer to find them.
All boaters should make sure their vessels and gear are in working order before they leave the dock, said Petty Officer 2nd Class Joshua Cooklin, a crew member of the rescue boat.
