Atlantic County will on Thursday hold its first H1N1 clinic aimed at a more widespread part of the population.

The free clinic, from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. in the old Value City store in Shore Mall in Egg Harbor Township, is open to:

- Pregnant women.

- Persons age 10 through 24.

- Persons who live with, or care for, infants younger than 6 months.

- Health-care and emergency medical services personnel.

- Persons age 25 through 64 who have certain chronic medical conditions or weakened immune systems.

County health officials said a parent or guardian must accompany each child age 10 through 17. Everyone who gets the vaccination must first sign an consent order.

The clinic is run by the Atlantic County Division of Public Health.

County health officials ran two earlier clinics for pregnant women and children age 16 months through 18. About 2,000 people received the vaccine at those clinics.

"Our goal is to vaccinate as many individuals within the target populations as choose to receive it," Atlantic County Health Officer Patricia Diamond. "This vaccine is provided on a voluntary basis, however vaccination is proven to be the best protection in fighting influenza."

Diamond said persons who received the vaccine at the prior two clinics showed no serious side effects.

According to the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, side effects suffered by the nearly 22 million who received the vaccination thus far nationwide involved some temporary soreness or swelling where the shot was administered.

County health officials urged people to with their doctors, health-care provides and area pharmacies to other vaccine availability.

Persons wanting more information on the H1N1 vaccine can visit the Atlantic County Web site at www.aclink.org, or call the county flu hotline at 677-5720.
