ATLANTIC CITY - Political and business leaders discussed Atlantic City's economic plight in a summit-style conference today, but offered no specific plan for reviving the tourism market.
The meeting, closed to the media, was the first of two economic conferences this week focusing on the slumping casino industry and the need to clean up the city's image to make it more tourist-friendly.
"The place needs to be safe, it needs to be clean and it must be welcoming to the general public," said James B. Kehoe, chairman of the state Casino Reinvestment Development Authority.
Kehoe was among about 25 government, business and casino representatives who were at the Carnegie Library Center for a meeting arranged by David S. Cordish, chairman of the Cordish Co., a nationally acclaimed real estate investment group.
Cordish said he wanted to generate ideas for rejuvenating the local economy amid a three-year casino slump and intense competition from slot parlors in surrounding states.
"Atlantic City needs to become a destination, and there are a lot of ways for doing that," Cordish said after the meeting was over. "The timeframe is to do it as quickly as humanly possible."
However, Cordish and others at the meeting said no specific proposals have emerged yet. The Cordish conference will be followed Tuesday by an economic summit organized by Mayor Lorenzo Langford.
