The Senate Judiciary Committee approved Richard Sweeney, the brother of Senate Majority Leader Steve Sweeney, D-Cumberland, Salem, Gloucester, for a seat on the Delaware River Port Authority. The committee asked him no questions in the brief Thursday morning hearing.

Richard Sweeney is the business agent and financial secretary for International association of Bridge, Structural, Ornamental and Reinforcing Ironworkers Local 399, taking over from his brother last year. Richard Sweeney was an ironworker who took a position in the union's front office after a crippling, near-fatal hit-and-run accident in 1999.

The DRPA owns and operates the Commodore Barry, Benjamin Franklin, Walt Whitman and Betsy Ross bridges as well as the PATCO Hi-Speed Line, RiverLink Ferry and Philadelphia Cruise Terminal though a subsidiary.

Sweeney replaced Vincent DeVito, who resigned. Positions on the bi-state agency's board are unpaid.

The committee also approved the following unpaid local appointments. All go to the state Senate for final approval:

- Gloria De La Rosa of Vineland to the Cumberland County Board of Taxation;

- Jeffrey B. Reichle of Cape May to the New Jersey Coastal and Ocean Protection Council;

- B. Muchael Zuckerman, of Middle Township, to the New Jersey Historical Commissions.

- Fran Smith of Greenwich to the Shell Fisheries Council

- Lou Toscano of Atlantic City to the South Jersey Transportation Authority;

- Douglas L. Van Sant of Bridgeton to the Delaware River and Bay Authority
