Absentee and mail-in ballots have been counted following an all-nighter at the Atlantic County Board of Elections - thanks to a surprise 9 p.m. order from the state Attorney General's Office.
In Absecon, Democratic at-large candidate Fred Green Jr. has pulled ahead of Republican candidate Christopher Seher in the race to succeed the late Democratic Counclman Charles Norris.
In Northfield, however, despite the Democrats' hopes that at-large candidate Paul Utts might pull out a win over Republican incumbent Councilman Tim Carew, they appear to have come up short by about 80 votes.
Provisional ballots have yet to be counted, however, though Strother said the number of rejected ballots in each municipality was minimal. All results are still unofficial pending certification.
Absecon: Board Chairwoman Lisa Strother said Green picked up 115 absentee and mail-in ballots for a total of 1,381, while Seher received 67 absentees and mail-ins for a total of 1,336.
Incumbent Republicans Barbara "Bobbie" Gorman and Gerald Falivene were both reelected to City Council by comfortable margins.
Northfield: Carew received 106 absentee and mail-in ballots for a total of 1,614 votes, Strother said, while Utts received 136 absentees and mail-ins to give him a total of 1,534.
WIth absentees and mail-ins, 1st Ward Democratic candidate Frank Perri defeated incumbent Republican Michael Turon 874-645, while incumbent Republican 2nd Ward Councilman Steven Vain defeated Democrat Steven Scheffler 929-713. Republicans will still control City Council, though their margin will drop from 5-2 to 4-3.
Mullica Township: Democrat Susan Polk appears to have a solid lead, though the race is still close for the second available Township Committee seat.
Polk picked up 51 absentee and mail-ins for a total of 1,042 votes. Her running mate, Democrat Anthony M. Gabris, received 47 absentee and mail-ins for a total of 1,000, just seven votes ahead of Republican incumbent Kathy Chasey, who received 53 absentees and mail-in votes for a total of 993. Republican Bruce Crowe picked up 47 absentees and mail-ins for a total of 956.
Estell Manor: Republican candidate Stephen Teasenfitz's margin over Democrat John E. Baker Jr. stays practically unchanged, with a count of 368-342.
