STAFFORD TOWNSHIP - An 18-year-old Eagleswood Township woman had to be airlifted to a Monmouth County trauma center after a chain-reaction accident Tuesday afternoon on Route 9, police said.
Courtney Williams was a passenger in a car driven by Andrew Abramowicz, also 18, from Tuckerton, when Abramowicz allegedly slammed into a car stopped in heavy traffic at about 2:30 p.m. at Cedar Bridge Road and Route 9, according to Stafford police Officer John Reed. Williams, who was not wearing a seat belt, suffered head and neck injuries and had to be taken by helicopter to Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune, police said. No information was available on her condition.
The driver of the car that Abramowicz hit, Irene Kuruc, 76, of Lacey Township, suffered arm and neck injuries and was taken by Stafford's emergency medical squad to Southern Ocean County Hospital. Kuruc's vehicle in turn rammed a car driven by 30-year-old Tracey Peterson, of Barnegat Township, who had been forced to stop in heavy southbound traffic, police said. Peterson's car had only moderate damage and could be driven from the scene, but the others had to be towed.
Police charged Abramowicz with careless driving and letting his passenger ride without a seat belt.
