CAPE MAY COURT HOUSE--Freeholders tonight unanimously approved a controversial plan to privatize the Cape May County Youth Shelter to save money for next year's budget.
The vote came over the objections of several residents and shelter employees, one of whom also read letters from social workers and guidance counselors opposing the privatization.
Employees left the meeting unsure of when their pink slips would arrive.
Freeholders approved a two-year contract with Camden-based non-profit The Center for Family Services, which submitted bids of $340,000 the first year and $320,000 for the second year to operate the shelter in Middle Township.
