TETERBORO - Officials are erecting a collapsible concrete barrier designed to prevent jets from overshooting a runway at Teterboro Airport.

A jet ran off a runway at Teterboro and injured 20 people in 2005 as it hit cars and a warehouse across from the airport's property.

A buffer that was installed in 2006 has stopped at least one plane from leaving the runway.

The Port Authority, which operates the airport, will spend $39 million on the project. The agency says the concrete material contains air pockets and is designed to stop planes traveling between 57 mph and 80 mph.

The 352-foot-long cushion will be built between Runway 1-19s southern end and Redneck Avenue in Moonachie. The road will be moved about 600 feet to the east.
