A fisherman died Friday after calling his mother for help from his fishing boat in Barnegat Bay, State Police said.
Alan Olivier, 55, was fishing in a 16-foot, open-top boat Friday morning on Barnegat Bay, when he called his mother and said that he was taking on water, said State Police spokesman Sgt. Julian Castellanos. The connection went dead, and his mother called 911 at 11:47 a.m. and gave his approximate location.
State Marine Police sent rescue boats from its Ocean and Atlantic City stations, and the Coast Guard sent a rescue boat from Barnegat Light, Castellanos said.
Another boater, whose name was not released, found Olivier in the water and transferred him to the Coast Guard rescue boat, the Coast Guard said. He was taken to the Beach Haven Yacht Club awaiting emergency-medical staff.
The EMS attempted to revive Olivier, but were unsuccessful, and he was pronounced dead at 12:50 p.m., Castellanos said.
