The Mainland Fitness center at the Cornerstone Commerce Center will close its doors at noon Thursday "due to conditions beyond our control", according to its Web site.
Mainland Fitness members learned about the closing Tuesday and early today, though various means.
Jane Watts, of Northfield, found out through her boss - who called her from Florida at 7 a.m. as soon as he heard via e-mail.
"It's horrible," Watts said outside the fitness center's doors. "Their cleanliness, their friendliness ... On the equipment, if you were doing something that wasn't right, they'd stop what you were doing and (help you). They were so warm and friendly and wonderful. Just over and above."
A message on Mainland Fitness's Web site asks members to contact manager Scott Rosen about membership or personal training refunds.
Rosen and owner Yale Steingard could not be reached for comment Wednesday.
Cornerstone Commerce Center owner Robin Karman would not comment about the reasons for Mainland Fitness's closing - "You'd have to ask them about that," she said. "All we do is rent space" - but added that at least two other fitness centers are interested in that location, plus three other possible tenants.
Watts said that she would wait and see where to sign up for gym membership.
"I'm not going anywhere until I find out where Scott's going," she said of Rosen.
